Dear Watertown Families,

The purpose of this communication is to advise you that we have several confirmed cases of the Coxsackie Virus, also known as Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease, in four of our five public schools.  This is a viral infection that causes a blister-like rash that is spread by coughing, sneezing, and touching infected persons or contaminated surfaces. Children and pregnant women are at greatest risk.  If your child is suspected of having the virus, you should visit your health provider.  If diagnosed, your child will need a doctor’s note to return to school.
We have taken a number of preventative measures to ensure the well-being of our students and staff.  We will be thoroughly disinfecting each of our school buildings daily, including all surfaces such as desktops, chairs, door handles, hand  railings, health office beds, etc.  Administrators, teachers, nurses, athletic directors, and coaches will be speaking to students with a consistent message about the importance of maintaining good hygiene, including frequent hand washing and not sharing personal items, such as water bottles and utensils.  We also ask that you remind your children at home about these important and appropriate precautions.  Since each school will be disinfected tonight and each evening until the number of cases of the virus diminishes, all Watertown schools will remain open as usual.
Thank you,

Donnah Swaby
Director of Student Services
